Ophelia’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination. The third of five siblings, she has faced both challenges and hope. After her parents’ divorce, she and her siblings were raised by their mother, a hardworking farmer trying to make ends meet amid the devastating effects of illegal mining.

She lives in Wassa Akropong in Ghana’s Western Region, a community whose environment has been heavily damaged by illegal mining. The family’s farm yields have dwindled. Land that was once fertile now produces barely enough to sustain them. Years of hard work have also affected her mother’s health, yet she continues to fight for her children’s future. Two of Ophelia’s siblings are in tertiary education and two are in senior high school.

Ophelia’s academic path has been difficult. With limited financial resources, higher education once felt out of reach. Still, her desire to care for others has guided her. “I want to be a nurse to give hope to those who are sick and vulnerable, just as others have shown me hope during my darkest times,” she says. Her commitment to nursing comes from a personal understanding of pain and hardship.

She is now a second-year nursing student at Wisconsin University College, excelling despite financial strain. Building Hope GH has been a pillar of strength, providing the financial support that allows her to continue her studies and work toward her goal of becoming a nurse.

To achieve her goals of providing compassionate care and community health outreach, Ophelia is seeking a scholarship that will ease financial burdens and let her focus fully on school. This support would invest in her future and in the well-being of her community. With the right help, she believes she can rise above her circumstances and become a beacon of hope for others.
